Now in its 9th Year, the Katra Film Series is an internationally recognized film festival and screenwriting competition dedicated to supporting the next generation of filmmakers at the world famous Alamo Drafthouse Theater. Hailed by Tribeca Films for its “honorable mission to spotlight new and emerging cinematic talents…where some of their top alums have since gone on to great things in the indie world and beyond” while the New York Times agrees “From the bottom up an amazing and excellent festival that has made it in New York!”

Since 2012, Katra alums have landed theatrical distribution and have gone on to write, produce and direct feature films and TV shows for HBO, FOX, Netflix, Showtime, ESPN, Vice Media including festival stops at Sundance, Tribeca, Berlin and Cannes Film Festival.

Additionally, we have been featured in the Wall Street Journal, CNN, The Huffington Post, Daily News, NY1, NBC, Women & Hollywood, Metro NY, The New Machine, Bklyner, and many other local and national publications.

It is sizzling out there and that only means one thing… SUMMER IS BACK!

Join us for NYC’s Summer Event of the Year – The 2018 Summer Series on Saturday August 4, 2018 in the capital of the world! To cool you down and get you in the mood for some riveting new films, music videos and web series all guests receive a complimentary beer courtesy of the Lagunitas Brewing Company.

The big apple is not short on summer events, but this year’s Summer Series is surely not to be missed! Featuring 3 world Premieres, 2 NY Premieres, and an International Co-Production from the Middle East, we have quite a thrilling lineup in store including the World Premiere of a new film starring 2-time Academy-Award Winner Michael Douglas’s son.

Euphoria – directed by Wynter Rhys

An artist is kidnapped by his fan base and dragged to face off with his 6 year old daughter to confront the dark side of fame.

Violetta – directed by Aaron Lehmann

A young girl, Violetta, is coming of age via her voyeuristic obsessions, which transport her out of a tragic home life.

Lollipop – directed by Hanaa Saleh

A 14-year-old Saudi girl experiences the onset of puberty, which means she must begin wearing a full black niqab.

Heimlich – directed by Lisanne Sartor

Nina and Alex are married with their toddler Elsie. Nina’s had enough.

Honeypot – directed by Jill Greenberg

Inspired by the audio of Harvey Weinstein obtained by the NYPD’s sting operation in 2015 with Ambra Gutierrez.

I Got A Callback – directed by Chris Fox

An actor is put to the test in an audition that goes awry.

Danny, a visionary graffiti artist with tremendous talent, gets caught up in a terrible crime when he goes out with his old pal James.

The Future is Ours – Happy New Year!

As 2016 comes to an end, it is time to reflect on what this remarkable year has brought us. It was the best of times and the worst of times, as the great Dickens once said, but it was nevertheless a time that will be ingrained in our memories forever. We lived through one of the most tumultuous political elections of our lifetimes, some of us had our lives upended by personal failures and triumphs, others lost loved ones, and we witnessed social unrest on a global scale like never before. But we survived. We’re alive and breathing. We made it through another year unscathed. Perhaps a little worse for wear but that’s part of life. We get right back up, lift our chin ups, and move on. What else is there to do? We are here to see another day in all its glorious splendor. And the question we have to ask ourselves is, what are we doing to make the world a better place?

In this time of great uncertainty and social upheaval, look to your family members, close friends, neighbors and all the loved ones that have stood by you this year while you endured all the ups and downs in your life and thank them for being there for you. Give them a big round hug. Show them how much you care about them, tell them how much you love them deeply and how you will be there when they need you most. That’s what we need now. More LOVE. More RESPECT. More KINDNESS. We’re all in this together and if we want our planet earth to survive we must act together.

As we gear up for our milestone 5^th Annual Grand Finale Series on January 25, 2017 at the new Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, we are proud to bring you exciting new features in 2017 such as live interviews, educational resources, movie reviews, crowdfunding strategies, original news stories and more. We are especially proud to be launching a blog dedicated to covering the diverse art scene in NYC. Sadly, we’ve been hearing through the grapevine that major news outlets are gutting their arts coverage and we simply can’t stand idly by as the art world takes a shellacking. Now more than ever we need the arts! So please continue to follow us in the New Year, share any art happenings in your neck of the woods, and let us know what you want us to cover. As we continue to work hard to discover the best new talent out there, we are proud to announce the 5th Annual Grand Finale Series will take place at the newly minted Alamo Drafthouse Theater in Downtown Brooklyn on January 25, 2017, with industry leaders Red Digital Cinema, Pond5, Museum of Moving Image, MovieMaker Magazine, CreatorUp sponsoring prizes for our top filmmakers.
