Join us for the 2017 Katra Film Series Semi-Annual Round on Saturday, August 12, 2017 where 14 elite shorts will compete for 5 slots to advance to the 6th Annual Grand Finale Series taking place at the Alamo Drafthouse Theater! The judges listed below will choose the top 4 shorts and the audience will vote for one short to advance to the Grand Finale Series.
Judges:
RANDY WILKINS: A three-time Emmy Award-winning director, cinematographer and editor from the Bronx, NY.
Shortly after receiving his B.A. in English from Franklin and Marshall College, Randy’s lifelong dream to play professional baseball was shattered after a significant injury. Under these tragic circumstances, he discovered a new passion: filmmaking. Befriending legendary filmmaker Spike Lee and by the director’s urging, Randy enrolled in NYU’s esteemed Tisch School of the Arts Graduate Film Program where he earned a chair’s fellowship and a Masters of Fine Arts in 2009.
As a finalist in the ABFF/HBO Short Film Contest, Randy’s NYU thesis film, “Osvaldo’s,” earned an exclusive license agreement with HBO for broadcast as well as numerous awards and festival screenings. Professionally, Randy has been raised through the legendary Forty Acres and A Mule Filmworks beginning as an editorial intern on “Inside Man.” Randy has recently served as Lead Editor on Lee’s joints including “Da Sweet Blood of Jesus,” “Jesus Shuttlesworth” for ESPN, “The Greatest Catch” for ESPN, “Katt Williams Priceless” for HBO, “What Is The Triangle? A Spike Lee Orange and Blue Skies Joint” for the MSG Network, Andra Day’s debut music video “Forever Mine” and “2 Fists Up” for ESPN. In addition to his editing work, Randy earned two Emmys for his cinematography on the FOX 59 Promo “Indiana Made” and PIX 11 Promo “Lionel.” As a director, Randy has enjoyed success with his award winning digital series “Docket 32357.” Wilkins is currently in post production for Season Two of Docket, while in development for his first feature script “Pray for A Little More Spring.” Randy’s latest directorial effort is the ESPN 30 for 30/Lil’ Spike Joint “86-32” chronicling the controversial decision between Roy Jones Jr. and Park Si-Hun in the Light Middle Heavyweight gold medal match at the 1988 Summer Olympics.
SANDY GARFUNKEL:
A native New Yorker, Sandy has been active in film, video, and event production for nearly thirty years.
She received a Bachelors degree in Speech Communications at the State University College at Geneseo, and a Masters in Film Directing (with Distinction) from the University of Edinburgh (Edinburgh College of Art).
Sandy began her career as a receptionist at a video production/post house, after which time she became a freelancer, working on everything from “Michael Jackson’s 30th Anniversary Concert,” to “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” “The Colbert Report,” “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and “The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore” — just to name a few.
She has written and directed three short films to date:
Sandy’s first short, “Perhaps Tomorrow,” USA, 2010, screened at over thirty festivals worldwide and won awards for Best Short Film (as well as over ten award nominations).
Her second film, “Out of the Ash,” USA/UK, 2013, shot in Scotland, was an Official Selection of the Edinburgh International Film Festival, (among many others), and won a BAFTA Scotland New Talent Award for Sound Design.
Sandy’s latest short, “JAM,” USA, 2015, is an award-winning fantasy film that had its World Premiere at Sci-Fi London, North American Premiere at Dances with Films in Los Angeles, and Asian Premiere at Bucheon International Fantastic Festival (Bifan) in South Korea.
Sandy’s first feature comedy script, “Unflushable,” is a Second Rounder at the prestigious Austin Film Festival 2016, and an Official Selection of the Global Script Competition at the Oaxaca Filmfest, with three nominations. Sandy plans to direct “Unflushable,” and is currently looking for the creative team to bring the script to screen.
In addition to prepping “Unflushable” for pre-production, Sandy is hard at work writing an original comedy TV series and incubating several other screenplay ideas.
