World Webfest Mania returns for its summer edition in virtual form, using the Footprint Network as an online platform for web creators around the world to celebrate and socialize from the comfort and safety of their own home.
The event takes place Wednesday, June 24th at 7pm EDT on the Footprint channel of parent festival Katra Film Series, for a suggested donation of $5 to cover festival expenses through quarantine. The two hour program will be followed by a direct link to join an open Zoom meeting where audiences can ask questions and hear filmmakers discuss their work. The winners will be determined by audience vote, with those chosen receiving prize packages from Final Draft, 3636 Studios, Bowery Film Festival, and International Screenwriter’s Association with a total value of $2000 for all prizes.
The summer edition boasts web shorts and series from six different countries, covering a diverse array of topics and genres. Many entries use fantasy and science fiction to deliver humorous takes on the modern world, such as a series about teens seeking youtube stardom in the midst of a zombie apocalypse, and an animated short imagining Nikola Tesla pitching his inventions to a 19th-century equivalent of “Shark Tank.” The lineup also features educational videos and media criticism that have become a staple of the web, including a documentary series on women in agriculture and a series analyzing the most shocking deaths in pop culture.
